索尼于 1994 年 12 月 3 日推出了第一代 PlayStation 游戏机，在庆祝 PS 诞生 30 周年的回顾中，它披露共售出了 1.6 亿台 PS2 游戏机，但更详细的数字没有公布。PS2 为史上最畅销的游戏机，之后是任天堂 DS 的 1.5402 亿台，以及任天堂 Switch 的 1.46 亿台。现在 PlayStation 前总裁 Shawn Layden 证实，PS2 的游戏机总生产量是 160,636,885 台。PS3 则是 88,159,116 台，而 PSP 掌机是 82,523,607 台。
